Every Quarter we publish an update of Labs projects that we've been working on behind the scenes at Polyform Labs. In this edition, for Q4 2023, we have a strong focus on the Venn-diagram like intersection of generative Ai, Gen Z / Alpha, and creative exploration.
2023 will be known as the year of Generative Ai. This year, while tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and MidJourney threatened to streamline processes, eliminate jobs, and create new professional workflows, the youth were sorrily left out of the equation and conversation all together. Through they will be living, growing, and learning in a world driven and informed by Ai, nobody seemed to be considering the unique designchallenges that come with building Ai tools for these underserved young people.
That's where Polyform Labs saw opportunity to learn, explore, and invent. The outcome was a framework for designing Ai for young people we call our Z-Ai Framework, as well as two products; Hey Robbie and Faible. We're happy to share with your our process, outcomes, and learnings.

Since the debut of ChatGPT, Ai tools have disrupted most aspects of life online. But the team at Polyform Labs was concerned that nothing was being built intentionally for the second biggest group in the world: Gen Z and their younger siblings Gen Alpha. Having deep experience building for this curious but vulnerable group, the team set out to define and design a framework for building safe, secure, and positive Ai for youth. To test our Z-Ai Framework, Robbie was born.
Large Language Model (LLM) Ai systems have become common place in the tools we use every day, from Microsoft Word, to ChatGPT, but how does a LLM built for children differ? This was the core question Robbie and our Z-Ai Framework aimed to solve.

A custom bedtime story app forthe imaginative parents of sleepykids, powered by generative Ai.
Generative tools like ChatGPT and MidJourney seems to change the way the world thought about Ai overnight and new use cases for generative content started popping up everywhere. In a lot of situations, Ai was not yet up to the task. Confusing facts and fiction, including extra fingers, overall there was a high threshold for nonsense that wasn’t palatable for most. But in challenge, Polyform Labs sees opportunity, and we began exploring a use case with a VERY high threshold for nonsense: children's stories. Anyone with a kid knows that they have their favourite stories, the ones you read again and again. These parents also know that kids love iPads. We decided to marry these two things with the magic of generative Ai and Faible was born.
