Emmy Award Winning AR Innovation for One of the World’s Most Extreme Sporting Events: Rampage.


A VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF BROADCAST SPORTS & MEDIA
For more than 20 years Red Bull Rampage has been one of the biggest & most extreme downhill mountain biking events on the planet. This invitation-only freeride mountain bike competition held near Zion National Park in Virgin, Utah brings the world’s top riders to the toughest terrain in the world to showcase the biggest and baddest tricks, lines and sends the sport has ever seen. This event is so extreme in scale it is impossible to grasp by only watching a broadcast at home. So the Red Bull team decided to do something about that and enlisted the help of several technology teams, including the crew at Polyform, to do something that had never been done before.

EXPERIENCE THE EXTREME SCALE OF RED BULL RAMPAGE AT HOME
Our friends at XR Media Group, whom we would work with on Youth Olympic Games project the year following, worked directly with the RedBull and the Intel drone teams to capture the breath-taking Rampage venue in full 3D. Leveraging the power of photogrammetry and advanced Ai post processing the team created a true-to-life digital twin of this location in a first ever exercise. On the software side, our Discovery team explored new ways to onboard thousands of people into unfamiliar AR workflows, opportunities to include more Red Bull media in the application, and new technologies to enhance the AR experience.







MAPPING DATA TO LIVE BROADCAST & AR MODELS
Through our Design Phase we explored new frontiers of augmented reality interactions as we mapped 360 video, 2D video, live-streamed media, social media, rider paths, and rider information to our scanned mountain model. Not only could users place the Red Bull Rampage mountain in their living room, but they could watch riders descend it in real time, explore rider profiles, and watch replays parallel to the live broadcast on their TV.
EMMY AWARD WINNING INNOVATION
Gaining high praise globally, our design work was honored with an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Digital Innovation in Sports. The project also won an Auggie at Augmented World Expo for Best Consumer App.
Augmented Reality continues to be a cornerstone technology for Red Bull events and media and exists within the Red Bull TV app, which currently has a 4.9 star rating on the App Store with more than 10,000 reviews.
